Seek Improvement

Wilkes Leads Cagers

Although the basketball season
does not get under way until December,
there is little time for leisure
left for the varsity roundball
candidates.

Coach Bill Gibson will be opening
the fall drills with an express
purpose of improving on last season's
overall mark of 10-15. A key
man figuring in Coach Gibson's
plans is Mike Wilkes. Wilkes had an
outstanding season last winter, scoring
some 377 points for a 15.7 average,
the highest on the squad.

The return of Bill Gerry, Bill
Fulton, and Kevin Kennelly will
case Wilkes' burden somewhat.
Gerry should probably assume the
"big man" obligations at the center
position. Fulton is expected to
complement Wilkes at the other
forward, while Kennelly may well
lead the attack from the backcourt.
Kennelly led the team in assists last
year with 90 and would presumably
call the signals from his guard position.

A lot of help will come from last
season's first-year team. Coach Dick
DiBiaso comped a commendable
9-5 record as his freshmen averaged
nearly 78 points a game. Big Scott
McCandish stands somewhere
around 6-10 and will challenge
Gerry for the post spot. McCandish
picked up an average of 17 rebounds
a game as a first-year man.

Basketball Team Seeks To Improve Last Season's 10-15 Record

Tim Rash and Chip Miller graduate
to Coach Gibson's depleted
backcourt corps and should see
plenty of action. Helping out
Fulton and Wilkes in close will be
Frank DeWitt and Tom Bagby. All
five of the starters on the first-year
team placed in double figures, a
scoring phenomena that should
please Mr. Gibson.

The Cavaliers open the 1969 season
on December 1 in Atlanta
against the Georgia Tech Yellow
Jackets and initiate their bid to attain
that ever elusive .500 ledger.
The first University Hall appearance
for the roundballers will be on September
10 as the Cavaliers square
off against a scrappy VMI five.
